Leiman Bros. - Jeweler's Work Bench

Appears to be converted for this use from a machine bench by Leiman Bros., NY.  Lower drawer is lined to catch items accidentally dropped from top.  There is  4"x 6" metal work place on top.  About 36"x 33"x 18".

  2. Wow, incredible find! My father James R. Whipp, worked for Leiman Bros. in Newark, NJ as a Shipping Clerk/Manager before WW-II. After being discharged from the US Navy, he returned to Leiman Bros. and assumed his old job. He caught the eye of Herbert Thompson - Sales Manager, who gave my father his first opportunity in Sales. Eventually, moving up to President. My father was responsible for moving the company to East Rutherford in the early 1960's. I learned to drive in their parking lot. Unfortunately, with Union problems, my father and his partner in Chicago: Herb Schifter, sold the company to IT&T in NYC. They moved the company to Louisiana and re-named it ITT Pneumotive. That was in the early 1970's, as I was in High School at the time. We lived in Hasbrouck Heights, which was a 10-15 minute ride to East Rutherford. I remember, as a kid, walking through the plant with my father. I can still see the men working on the various Vacuum Pumps and Air Compressors that they manufactured. This was a great walk down memory lane for me. If anyone has any thoughts or questions regarding Leiman Bros., my name is Patrick J. Whipp and I still live in New Jersey about 30 minutes from the Hasbrouck Heights / East Rutherford area. My email is: pwhipp@verizon.net

  4. Hi Geoff,
Sorry, I do not know.  My father James R. Whipp, worked for LEIMAN BROTHERS when it was at 153 Christie Street in Newark, NJ from before WW-II to around 1970 (give or take).  He started as a Shipping Clerk and came home from his naval service in the Pacific and they retained his job for him.  He worked his way up to Sales, as he caught the eye of the Sales Manager: Herbert Thompson.  When Mr. Thompson retired, my father became the Sales Manager and then eventually he became the President.  Sometime in the early 1960's (1962?) he moved the company to East Rutherford, NJ, which was probably 10 miles North of Newark.  I learned to drive in that parking lot in East Rutherford on East Union Avenue. In the early 1970's due to Union issues, he and his partner Herb Schifter (Chicago) sold it to ITT who renamed it ITT Pneumotive and moved it to Monroe, Louisiana.  Before moving to Newark around 1930, they  were located at 23 Walker Street - New York, New York from its inception, which may have been around the late 1800's or the early 1900's in NYC.  If you google Leiman Bros. you can find some interesting information if you like to dig!  Take a look at the below link ... interesting. You'll find an interesting old marketing brochure that has something like you mentioned above.
Just curious, how is it that you have interest in Leiman Bros.?
